Algoma was originally named by the Potawatomi Indians "An-Ne-Pe" which meant "land of the great gray wolf".
The city escaped the great fire of 1871 known as the Peshtigo Fire, that skipped over the Bay of Green Bay across to the Peninsula. The residents barely escaped the fire and in an attempt to save some of their belonging loaded boats and went out on Lake Michigan as the fires approached. At the last moment, very heavy rains extinguished the fire and the city was spared.
Algoma was renamed in 1879 after another Indian name meaning "Park of flowers". Algoma has been known for its commercial fishing and had the largest fleet on Lake Michigan during that time. Today there is still commercial fishing but it is mostly done for sport. There are at least twelve charter fishing companies available in Algoma. Salmon and Trout are the main catch.
